Open Letter to Thomas S. Monson – Mormon Extermination Order Parallels SB 1070
28 September 2010
Thomas S. Monson, President
Church of Latter Day Saints
50 E North Temple
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150
Dear Mr. Monson:
We know that in 1838 the Missouri Governor signed the Mormon Extermination Order, where the order declared, “Mormons as enemies, must be exterminated, and driven from the State.” This order caused thousands of families to be driven from their farms, homes, relatives and land. Arizonans and Hispanic immigrants are enduring a similar situation with the extreme and oppressive immigration bill that was introduced by Russell Pearce who is a Mesa, Arizona, State Senator and member of the Mormon church.
Much of the world has watched the unfolding events associated with this extreme and oppressive immigration bill, while few have shown the courage to speak against this inhumane and oppressive law. Just as Mormon families were driven out of the state of Missouri in early American history, we are now witnessing Arizona families being driven out and ripped apart. Mothers and fathers are being taken away with their children left behind. The hurt, confusion, anxiety and tears are so deep in our children that I am afraid the consequences will not be repairable.
Pearce is on record on several occasions claiming that he authored SB 1070. However, we also know that Pearce sought a Law Professor out of Missouri, to write this bill. The Missouri Law Professor is also the attorney for FAIR, which is an organization that embraces the culture of death and negative population growth.
We would like to thank you for allowing informative editorials to appear in the LDS-owned newspaper — Deseret News. We especially appreciated Mark Willes’ editorial last month. However, the information is coming in too little and too late in the state of Arizona. In fact, we know the Mesa Mormon community is divided over the immigration issue right now. Hispanic Mormons are telling us that the Mormon leadership should speak out strongly against one of their own members (Russell Pearce) because it is the church’s leadership that will prove the fruits of their spirit. Pearce is on record for welcoming back Operation Wetback, and that antiquated terminology is divisive and discriminatory, and harkens back to a pre-Civil Rights Act era.
Just as the Missouri Governor had no regard for the Mormon families being driven out in 1838, and just as the Arizona Governor had no regard for the families being driven out and ripped apart from their families, we have to wonder if the Mormon leadership will have the courage to communicate to the people of Mesa, Arizona, that Russell Pearce’s stance and treatment towards Hispanic immigrants is evil.
We urge you to act quickly and communicate to the members of the Church of Latter Day Saints before October 27, 2010, which marks the anniversary of the Missouri Extermination Order. The situation here in Arizona is dire and extreme, and we are trying to undo an evil idea that will cost us the hearts and minds of future generations and will take decades to reverse if we do not act now.
The SB 1070 law does not only affect the undocumented, it is affecting legal residents and Americans of Hispanic heritage. The Arizona immigration bill has created a poisonous and intolerable atmosphere, and we have no choice but to address these concerns directly to the leadership of the man who is perverting humane ideals under the guise of the church. We hope to see you take action in Mesa, Arizona, so there will be no misunderstanding on which principles and humane direction the Mormon Church stands firm on. The time for the Mormon Church to show its leadership is now.
Sincerely,
DeeDee Blase, Founder
