Cardinal Dolan Talks Immigration and the GOP (Archbishop of New York and President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops)
SOMOS REPUBLICANS is appreciative of Cardinal Dolan. Several Hispanic Republicans are switching their affiliation to the Independent party due to the hostile GOP. The immigration has become a top priority to Latinos.
We are unhappy with Senator Marco Rubio’s proposal, too, because he benefited from Cuban amnesty via the Cuban Adjustment Act and does not want to implement a humane and compassionate plan for children and youth who came to U.S. through no fault of their own.
Republicans are offering crumbs to Latinos, and Rubio rejected our legal immigration plan when we presented our 12 Steps to LEGAL Immigration. But now that it is an election year, he wants to offer crumbs to those of Mexican-Americans and other ethnic groups who do not benefit from Cuban amnesty.

Lugar intervenes where there’s religious persecution
April 29, 2012 By Lugar For Senate
by John Hanford III
Indianapolis Star
Printed April 26, 2012Sen. Dick Lugar is well known for his leadership in fashioning U.S. policy on agriculture and for dismantling thousands of nuclear warheads previously aimed at the U.S. He has recently championed American energy security and jobs by leading the drive for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, and has long been a prominent proponent of a robust American foreign policy. There is, however, another area of significant accomplishment far less known and appreciated. Lugar’s office has done more to advance religious freedom and help persecuted Christians around the world than any Senate office in U.S. history. I know this because I worked on these endeavors by his side for many years. None can match his record.According to a study by the Pew Forum on Religion, nearly 70 percent of the world’s people live in nations that seriously restrict religious freedom, with Christians suffering the most widespread persecution. But while religious freedom is enshrined as America’s “first freedom” in the Bill of Rights and cherished by her citizenry, the U.S. government has not always placed a high priority on advancing this fundamental human right in its foreign policy.Beginning in the mid-1980s, before the plight of persecuted Christians caught the media’s attention, Lugar began leading U.S. interventions on their behalf. He first rallied the Senate in publicly condemning the repression of Christians in the Soviet Union. In 1987, after meeting with a high-level Soviet official, he announced to the world that all 200 remaining religious prisoners would be freed and that the Soviets had pledged to roll back other repressive policies.
Years later, when the Russian parliament passed legislation threatening to move that nation back toward Soviet-era controls, Lugar led 170 U.S. senators and representatives in a successful appeal to persuade Russian President Boris Yeltsin, twice, to veto that proposed law. Rarely do so many members of Congress join together in a protest to a foreign head of state. But such is the reach of Lugar’s stature in Congress.
Over the years, Lugar has led many Congressional interventions against persecuting regimes, in some instances mobilizing U.S. presidents to become personally involved. Some of Lugar’s efforts have targeted repressive laws, as in China, Nepal, and various Muslim nations. In other instances, he has worked to free religious prisoners or to stop a new outbreak in the persecution of Christians.
One intervention, culminating in a middle-of-the-night phone call to the Minister of Justice of a radical Muslim regime, saved the life of a pastor shortly before his planned execution. Another intervention in a different Muslim nation freed Christians who had been hung by their wrists and tortured with electric shock. Another time, when a Hoosier was imprisoned in a hostile land for his Christian activities, Lugar spared no effort in taking his appeal to the foreign head of state to secure his release.
Of all Sen. Lugar’s contributions in this arena, the most historic was his office’s leadership in creating the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 (IRFA) – a law which Congress passed unanimously. The entire permanent structure of our nation’s ongoing work on religious freedom issues, as laid out in IRFA, was conceived and crafted around the conference table in Lugar’s office.
It is this sort of leadership in foreign affairs that Americans can universally applaud. Few in public service today command the respect Lugar does. For decades he has faithfully used that influence to serve not only vital American interests in defense, agriculture or trade but also to champion the freedoms of the powerless.
President George Washington once wrote, “I beg you will be persuaded that no one will be found more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against ….. every species of religious persecution.”
No Senate office in U.S. history has done more to lead this fight against religious persecution around the world than Dick Lugar’s.
Hanford was appointed by President George W. Bush as U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom. He also worked for 14 years on Lugar’s staff.
ACTION ALERT: R-Gilbert Senator Andy Biggs should not waste Arizona taxpayer money to help ousted lawmaker Russell Pearce
May 3, 2012 by admin
The economic State of Arizona cannot afford to waste over a quarter of a million dollars on ousted lawmaker Russell Pearce. Pearce was ousted by the people in his district and it is unreasonable to expect Arizona taxpayers to set up a framework that would give Pearce a payment. Pearce did not spend any of his own money for the campaign, therefore, Arizona taxpayers should not have to pay this bill either.

Tequila Party Teams Up With Evotee Targeting Key Swing Presidential States for 2012
Albuquerque, NM — Recently the Rolling Stone wrote a piece regarding the The GOP War on Voting with Kris Kobach at the helm of voter suppression laws.
Ari Berman wrote:
In light of voter suppression laws, the Tequila Party Movement has begun a working relationship and partnership with the founder and CEO of Evotee, Jason Libersky. Our theme for 2012 is for us (eligible Latino voters) to be a “voice via our vote for the voiceless undocumented.”
Evotee will enable us to register to vote in a secure and verifiable, but easy way. Judging from the feed back we have received from both Republican and Democrat voters and county clerks, we have balanced these requirements into a solution that benefits all stake-holder in the voter registration process. The Evotee flagship product, Evotee Register provides secure, efficient, and fully online voter registration. The registration platform application is currently available for iPad. Evotee Register removes numerous obstacles to efficient, accurate, and verifiable voter registration and greatly reduces the workload placed on county clerks.
The platform is currently in use in New Mexico and will be ready for nationwide deployment in approximately 6 weeks.
As evotee launches the application in high Hispanic populated states with emphasis on key Presidential states, we will continue to train our state Tequila Party leaders in an effort to Rock the Latino Vote. Currently we have been using the online voter registration powered by Rock the Vote, and we feel the iPad online version of Evotee will fit our needs when we register eligible Latino voters at our Get Out the Vote Rallies, too.
We are told a Spanish version of the Evotee application should be made available to us in approximately 4 weeks. 2012 is the year of the Latino and we will overcome voter suppression laws being implemented against us.

ACTION ALERT: How to get involved (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops concern that immigrants are welcomed as if they are part of our own families…)
USCCB writes:
The USCCB is also concerned that immigrants are welcomed as if they are part of our own families; that our immigration and refugee processes are comprehensible and user-friendly; that workers have the right to work and live without exploitation; that efforts to stem undocumented migration maintain the dignity, humanity, and due process rights of those who are either seeking to come here or who are already here in suspected undocumented status.

National Catholic Reporter: Rubio does little to endear Romney to Latino voters
Rubio does little to endear Romney to Latino voters
by Mario T. García on Apr. 26, 2012
Gov. Mitt Romney is now campaigning with Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, and there is growing media speculation that Romney might be seriously considering Rubio as a possible running mate.
Whether true or not, this comes with recent polls showing that only 14 percent of Latinos support Romney for president while 70 percent endorse President Barack Obama. In 2008, then-Sen. Obama won more than 70 percent of the Latino vote.
Romney’s seemingly embrace of Rubio is aimed to address this major deficiency he faces with Latinos. The overwhelming Latino vote for Obama four years ago was clearly one of the major factors in his victory. It allowed him to win in Florida, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada, all key contested states. Obama will have to retain all or most of these states if he is to retain his office.
In a close state-by-state election, if Romney can cut into the Latino vote, it could swing these states and possibly others, such as Arizona, Indiana and Missouri, into his column. Rubio is intended for now to indicate that Romney supports Latinos, though he has yet to spell out how his future policies, including his policy on immigration, would advance the interests of Latinos.
Certainly, his extreme right-wing position on immigration paralleling Arizona’s anti-immigrant legislation has soured him to many Latinos. Romney doesn’t seem to understand that for Latinos, the immigration issue isn’t just a matter of public policy; it’s a matter of status and respect. Because the immigration legislation passed by states, including Arizona and Alabama, also smacks of racial profiling of Latinos, many if not most Latinos identify these laws and attitudes as anti-Latino.
This includes U.S.-born Latinos, the majority of the Latino population, who have worked hard to be integrated into U.S. society yet still face much anti-Latino racism. They are identifying Republicans as part of this anti-Latino movement.
Putting Rubio on a potential ticket with Romney won’t necessarily help with Latino voters. Perhaps it will in Rubio’s home state of Florida and with a minority Cuban-American vote, but not with other Latinos, such as Mexican-Americans, who represent the overwhelming number of Latinos in the country. As someone has said, “they don’t vote that way.”
Most Latinos will not vote for a Republican ticket even if it includes a Latino. At the national level, most Latinos have voted the Democratic Party since the 1930s, when they supported President Franklin Delano Roosevelt because they believed he felt their pain during the Great Depression. Moreover, Rubio’s only partial support for immigration reform will not endear him to most Latinos. Only if Romney were to break from the extreme right wing of his party and support some efforts to legalize the thousands of undocumented immigrants in the country and to support the Dream Act would he have a chance of getting greater Latino support. This major shift remains to be seen. In the meantime, taking Rubio on the campaign trail will do little for Romney with Latinos.
