Phoenix, AZ — SOMOS REPUBLICANS has been asking Senator Marco Rubio to get on the right side of the immigration issue for months. In a recent story, Washington Post showed documents — including naturalization papers and other official records — reveals that the Florida Republican’s account embellishes the facts of his immigrant history. The documents show that Rubio’s parents came to the United States and were admitted for permanent residence more than 21 / 2years before Castro’s forces overthrew the Cuban government and took power on New Year’s Day 1959. Rubio has held himself out to be a son of Cuban exiles but the evidence shows he is nothing of the sort.
We believe Rubio knew when and how his parents arrived here in the U.S. Are his parents economic immigrants? How did his parents leave Cuba originally and arrive here in the U.S.? Did they overstay their visa? How did they then immigrate given that the Cuban Adjustment Act was not even around before Castro came to power?
Rubio has supported harsh anti-immigration laws and enforcement only policies. In fact, Rubio and Republican Texas Congressman Lamar Smith have sponsored a large government idea via National E-verify.
In light of the Washington Post story, we believe it is time to find out the complete history of his parents’ immigration history. It is also time for Rubio to be a leader and help Senator Bob Menendez fix the broken immigration system. We have already presented our position to fix the broken immigration system to Democratic and Republican Senators with a significant amount of support from Democrats. We were told by Rubio’s office he would not support our position. We are asking him to reconsider his anti-immigrant position in providing a solution to the broken immigration system under the Obama administration. This is the federal government’s responsibility and even though this is a tough issue to fix, it must be done. Rubio must show leadership and work on a bipartisan secure borders and legal immigration plan with Menendez. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue – this is an American issue as we continue to be that Shining City on a Hill.

“I think its time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the founding fathers. Not too long ago 2 friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a business man who had excaped from Castro. And in the midst of one of his stories, my friends turned to the other and said, ‘we don’t know how lucky we are.’ And the Cuban stopped and said, ‘How lucky YOU are, I had some place to escape to.’ In that sentence he told us the entire story.”

Phoenix, AZ – Judge Edward Burke punctured the testimony of East Valley Tea Party chairman Greg Western, a Russell Pearce supporter who has been helping Cortes with her campaign in yesterday’s court ruling. Judge Burke also stated that without the support of Pearce supporters, Cortes would have had no chance of qualifying as a candidate or running any sort of political campaign.
It is sad for our Latino community to see Olivia Cortes be used and manipulated by Tea Party extremists who have taken advantage of her political ignorance. Cortes admitted repeatedly on the stand during the hearing that she was new to campaigning and acknowledged she didn’t have very much information on how to campaign. She acknowledged her reliance on Tea Party and Russell Pearce supporter Greg Western who indeed has much campaigning experience.
These same Tea Party Russell Pearce supporters claim they are against unions, yet have used political signs to promote Cortes utilizing union slogans from United Farm Worker (UFW) to the tune of “Si Se Puede”. Why didn’t the Tea Party / Pearce supporters solely support Pearce? Was it that important for them in an attempt to dilute the voting pool that they would set aside what they claim to stand for? We believe Tea Party and Pearce supporters have interfered with the purity of elections, and it is disingenuous for them to support Pearce (who is for closed borders) while supporting another candidate, Cortes (who is for open borders).
We hope the people of Mesa, Arizona, specifically those who are members of the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) will vote for the candidate who has minimal ties to scandalous behavior. So far it appears Jerry Lewis is the candidate that will uphold the Constitution of the United States and he seems to takes on the views that are similar to the views of LDS Prophet, Thomas S. Monson. Arizona’s reputation has been damaged severely, and we would like to see a candidate who will put Arizona back to work instead of treating the Arizona state legislature like a circus. Arizona wants to be taken seriously again – not perceived as a laughing stock.

Phoenix, AZ — It has come to the attention of Somos Republicans, the largest Latino Republican group in the country, that David Horowitz of Front Page Magazine will be speaking on behalf of Russell Pearce. David Horowitz — a conservative American of Jewish heritage — is known for his advocacy of conservative principles, support for Israel and his fight for tougher prosecution of the war on terror. His activism demonstrates that conservative and Republican values transcend both color and creed while exploding negative stereotypes planted by liberal Democrats. Somos Republicans shares this commitment to racial and religious inclusiveness.
We strongly urge Mr. Horowitz to not hand Russell Pearce the fig leaf he needs by speaking on his behalf.
Our concern is that Horowitz will be providing legitimacy to Russell Pearce, a man who in 2006 disseminated White Supremacist propaganda denying the Holocaust. Pearce also endorsed and filmed campaign promotional materials for Neo-Nazi leader, JT Ready in 2006 and appearing with Ready at a political rally in 2007. When asked by a local reporter about his son, Joshua’s “Iron Eagle,” Neo-Nazi tattoo, Pearce seemed oddly unconcerned and declared his opposition to tattoos rather than forth-rightly condemning anti-Semitism and domestic terrorist groups like the Neo-Nazis. For these and many other reasons, it is clear that Pearce does not share Somos Republicans’ and David Horowitz’s vision of a Republican party and a conservative movement which respects the dignity of all human beings. We strongly urge Mr. Horowitz to not hand Russell Pearce the fig leaf he needs by speaking on his behalf.

We will never forget the sacrifices of Navy Seal Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson. His canine partner was sad and it was evident at his funeral. I know that dogs who are trained to protect your life have a special connection with their handler. This is heart wrenching indeed, but we want to send our prayers to the Spirit world and express our gratitude to Jon if he is listening. He was indeed brave and valiant in Afghanistan, and we will never forget what he did.

As I have stated before time and time again, the Republican party will need to make up for their past DREAM Act voting sins in order to secure the dwindling and remaining Latino Republican vote which has fallen off the proverbial cliff since December 2010.
News of President Obama’s reverse in deportation is the last thing that the GOP wants to see right now. They had planned on using the ‘divide and conquer’ strategy, and Obama’s recent move prevents that. The only way…..I repeat…the ONLY way the GOP can look reasonable again to most Latinos is to work and move towards reasonable legal immigration. The system is broken and the federal government via US Senators must be solution makers.
Texas Representative Lamar Smith has been working frantically to strip away Obama’s executive powers until 2013. But Obama’s move today will secure a strong Latino portion of the vote. Again, the only way the GOP can retain at least 30% or more of the Latin vote is to MOVE on comprehensive legal immigration reform to make up for their past DREAM Act vote. There is yet a very small window of opportunity for GOP to act and make up. Question is…will they do it? If not, they lose an entire generation of future Latino votes. The Latino sleeping giant is awake, and that is evident with the multiple protests by Latino Democrats and DREAM Act activists pulling through….fighting and risking arrest.

The Obama Administration just announced that it would be changing the way it deals with undocumented immigrants. According to a report from the Associated Press, and Noticias Telemundo, the administration has said it will review cases individually and then make decisions on a case-by-case basis.
AP reported that convicted criminals will be priority and:
The government says many illegal immigrants who don’t have criminal records but are facing possible deportation will get to stay in the U.S. indefinitely and have a chance to apply for a work permit…
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says authorities will make a case-by-case review of the approximately 300,000 illegal immigrants who are facing possible deportation.
Telemundo tweeted that the administration will go after the “worst of the worst” and that workers who are undocumented may have a chance to apply for a work permit.

In September 2010, I wrote a letter addressed to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) despite being told by my Mormon faithful friends that the letter would probably fall on deaf ears due to the political and toxic nature of the immigration issue. I forged ahead and petitioned the LDS prophet as a desperate last attempt to stop the Latino bleeding, in the sense that thousands of families in Arizona were being forced apart and/or detained in prisons. Prisons that receive a bureaucratic and financial incentive from the federal government to jail the non-criminal minded element of the undocumented with millions in wasted taxpayer dollars. Being in the United States illegally is a civil offense, yet Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce wanted to criminalize the offense and alter the Constitution of the United States.
We petitioned the prophet and paralleled our plight with theirs – the Extermination Order signed by the Missouri Governor of 1838 was similar to how our Arizona Governor wanted voluntary mass exodus of Latino families. We were delighted to hear about the Utah Compact support by the LDS community, which showed their courage in supporting humane immigration policies. Indeed, we are grateful to the Prophet Thomas S. Monson for his compassionate heart.
One of the canons of scripture that members of the LDS Church revere is the “Doctrine and Covenants.” In that volume of scripture there is a truism that applies to humankind generally – in this case, it applies very pointedly to Russell Pearce. It says:
“We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.” §121:39.
Perhaps this passage answers the question as to why many of Russell Pearce’s former supporters are gravitating to a new candidate. Mr. Pearce’s positions on several issues reveal his abuse of power and antipathy for his fellow Arizonans.
While many of Mr. Pearce’s constituents may have long forgiven him for domestic violence toward his wife, there are continuing reminders in Mr. Pearce’s recent actions that suggest that he is more interested in himself than in the people of Arizona.
Mr. Pearce and his acolytes are well known for introducing a number of immigration-related bills. While the introduction of the bills was not surprising, his treatment of Republicans who did not march lockstep to his demands is frightening. For example, Bill Koponicki, a Republican from District 5 who was voted “Best Republican Representative for the 49th Legislature,” was one of those who dared to cross Mr. Pearce. When he refused to support Mr. Pearce on an immigration matter, Rep. Koponicki was attacked and threatened.
This five term legislator was ultimately ousted by the Republican establishment that supports Pearce. More recently, Pearce henchman, Chuck Coughlin, a well-known lobbyist and Pearce contributor, threatened any Republican who would dare run against Pearce in the recall election. Pearce feigns a love for democracy, but loves demagoguery more.
Mr. Pearce’s bullying seemingly knows no limits. His view of the Senate is that it is his fiefdom, rather than the People’s house where the good of all Arizonans is paramount. As proof of this unrighteous dominion, Mr. Pearce recently adopted a “blacklist” to bar his detractors from even entering the Senate building. Indeed, when questioned on this point, the Capitol Police confirmed that they had received such a list from Mr. Pearce, and that they had been ordered to bar certain individuals from entering the Senate building. To residents of District 18, these kinds of activities are not an affirmation of the Constitution, but rather an unimaginable negation of the Constitution. Mr. Pearce does not love the Constitution – he loves power.
Regardless of where one stands on the immigration issue, Mr. Pearce’s attack on children born in the United States has to stand as one of the most blatant attacks on the Constitution. His birthright citizenship bill would have denied citizenship to those born in the United States (“anchor babies,” as he calls them). Section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution provides:
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
The Constitution is clear on this point. For that reason, when your children are born in Arizona, you do not have to prove your citizenship because your citizenship is irrelevant. The Constitution says unequivocally that your newborn child is a citizen.
We hope the LDS community in Mesa will continue to hold true to their values, the United States Constitution, and the position of the prophet, when they cast their votes during the Russell Pearce special elections in November 2011. We hope they will consider voting for Jerry Lewis, who represents the true values of the Mormon Church, and we believe Lewis will protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States.
