Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Hispanic Republicans do not support Russell Pearce’s version of SB 1070. Russell Pearce’s version of SB 1070 expands government, and his approach is unreasonable during a time when the State of Arizona is facing a budget crisis. Pearce’s version of SB 1070 requires an increase in taxpayer resources to carry out his agenda. As it stands, we cannot even afford the police force that we currently have due to our budget crisis, and in fact, Brewer has proposed a tax increase in order to sustain the budget that we have.
Not only does Russell Pearce’s SB 1070 expand “government powers,” it can also violate civil rights because it can be used and abused as a means to stop and question any American-born citizen with Hispanic ethnic backgrounds such as ourselves.
Russell Pearce’s SB 1070 bill is very similar to what the Obama administration is doing, in the sense that both Pearce and Obama are expanding “government and local agency” powers to remove the non-criminal element of the undocumented immigrants. As of February 15, 2010, the DRO under the Obama administration has removed 60,397 non-criminal aliens. (Office of Detention and Removal Operations (2010, February 22). DRO Taskings. Retrieved April 3, 2010, from the Washington Post: media.washingtonpost.com ). As of February 15, 2010, the Obama administration / ICE has removed 56,853 criminal aliens. Obama has removed more non-criminal aliens vs. criminal aliens.
SB 1070 is a direct failure of the Obama administration because Obama lied to Hispanics when he promised to pass fair immigration reform within 90 days of his Presidency. We believe that Obama lied to Latinos in order to get their vote, which ultimately gave him the advantage during the 2008 Presidential election. If the Obama administration would have lived up to his promises, we would not have the SB 1070 bill facing our community today.
If Governor Jan Brewer signs SB 1070 next week, members of Somos Republicans and several Arizona Hispanic Republicans will not vote for her in 2010. We will “smoke her out” as Governor, much like we witnessed in a recent political cycle when Harry Mitchell ran against JD Hayworth in Congressional District 5. JD Hayworth lost to Harry Mitchell in large part due to his inhumane views and vitriol towards all undocumented immigrants. In 2006, Latino Republicans simply refused to vote for JD Hayworth, which ultimately gave Harry Mitchell the win even though the district was heavily Republican.
Arizona Hispanic Republicans strongly believe in secure borders; however, we should direct our Arizona tax paying dollars towards the CRIMINAL element of the illegal immigrants. The State of Arizona is currently experiencing a budget crisis, and the reasonable and humane approach towards immigration would be to target the criminal element of the undocumented, and continue to work towards a humane immigration bill. The hard-working, non-criminal undocumented immigrant often gets ignored for keeping our food prices low, offering competitive labor in the labor and agricultural markets, and their contributions of millions and millions of dollars they contribute towards coffers.
We are calling upon every Latino Democrat to register as an Independent or Republican voter for the sole purpose of “smoking out” politicians such as Russell Pearce, JD Hayworth, and Jan Brewer if she signs SB 1070 during this 2010 election cycle.

As a Democrat I want to know what Hispanic Republicans position is on this SB 1070. I think we can agree SB 1070 is a new version of Juan Crow. However, Gov. Brewer immediate failure to veto SB 1070 show her disrespect to Hispanic Republicans and the Latino community.
SB 1070 will turn Arizona Blue in 2012.
We are disgusted with SB 1070. Please take a look at our Press Releases for further.
